Chris Taylor ’03: Follow Your Passion … At 140MPH

When Chris Taylor ‘03 was a senior at St. Andrew’s, he already knew the path he wanted to take when he graduated. Chris had a passion for fast cars and racing and he wanted to jump right into the racing industry. For his senior project, Chris built a racecar from scratch. The venture turned out to be more challenging than he anticipated, but it only fueled his motivation to continue working on cars.

Above is a photo of Chris at the F1 track with one of his racecars.

Chris began racing cars when he was eight years old. He began by racing quarter midgets and competed in the national championships in Colorado and Canada. As Chris grew bigger, so did the cars. His knowledge of all aspects of the racing industry increased, as well.

Upon graduation, Chris and his dad, Walt, opened Taylor Rotorsports in 2003. A decade later, Chris is the owner of Chris Taylor Racing Services. Chris’ company is dedicated to providing an excellent racing experience for the “pro-sumers” with a passion for racing. Chris provides garage services and race cars for “arrive-and-drive” racers. His facility is located near the Circuit of the Americas F1 Track and he supplies cars for other races that are scheduled for the F1 track and at other racetracks around the state. He provides cars for the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), National Auto Sport Association (NASA), and Pro Series races.

Chris’ racing connections and reputation have grown over the last decade. He attributes much of his knowledge of the sportscar marketing business to his relationship with Tavo Hellmund, who was instrumental in bringing F1 to Austin. Because Chris’ facility is located next door to the F1 track, he is able to provide parking and camping locations for Circuit of the Americas events and for racing enthusiasts coming to Austin for other track events. Learn more here about his plans for this week’s upcoming races.

Chris is also very active at Harris Hill Raceway (H2R), a track located near San Marcos. When Chris first introduced himself to the track owners, he discovered that the track was owned by a St. Andrew’s dad, Bo Rivers, father of Carley Rivers ‘05. The Harris Hill Road Track is essentially a club for people interested in driving their own cars in a controlled racetrack environment. Drivers can take lessons and book lap time to experience driving at a new level.

If you are yearning for that speedier-than-highway driving experience, take a look at the video below from Chris’ racing channel.

Check in with Chris if you, too, want to experience speeding down a track with an alum who really knows the sport.

The quote, which Chris selected as a senior to include in the yearbook, only confirms the path he has taken: “There are only three true sports: mountain climbing, bullfighting, and motor racing. The rest are all games.”

– Ernest Hemingway
