Mary Ann Frishman ’79: Alum Co-Authors SAS 60-Year History

When Mary Ann Frishman ‘79 was completing one of her many writing assignments in Ms. Watkins’ class, she never imagined that years later she would be co-authoring the 60-year history of St. Andrew’s with long-time Head of School, Lucy Nazro.
Mary Ann Thornhill, as she was called in 1979, is pictured in the second row, far left, of the class photo above. In the upper right photo, she is providing all of the intensity needed for her tug-o-war team during Field Day.
A 60-Year History

Before Lucy retired, the Board of Directors asked her to help write about the school and its growth during her 30+ years of service. Two previous histories had been recorded, but the most recent version was over a decade old. The first history, written by R.W Byram, the second Chairman of the Board, was a two-page reflection about the creation of the school. Alice McKenna, a long-time teacher, wrote the second history with a pamphlet titled, The Gift and the Blessing.

Enter Mary Ann Frishman ‘79. Who better to help Lucy write the history than a person experienced in publishing books for very discerning audiences and who is also an alum? Mary Ann is the President of FrishCo, a full-service educational publishing company with clients like Harcourt, Houghton Mifflin, McGraw Hill, and Scholastic. Mary Ann and Lucy met throughout the year researching stories, culling photos, and reviewing additonal writings contributed by William Osborn and others.

Once the pieces were gathered, Mary Ann brought in her excellent team to complete the project. She asked Cory Wolf to help edit the text. Cory has worked closely with Mary Ann as a consultant to FrishCo, and was a former St. Andrew’s Parents’ Council President. Mary Ann also called on her friends at Pearl Production to art direct and format the book. They took the vision Mary Ann and Lucy brought to the project and created a beautiful chronicle.
The books will arrive on November 12th, and will be available for purchase on St. Andrew’s Day, November 13th. You may also purchase the book online by following this link to the book ordering page.

What’s Next?

What is next for Mary Ann? Along with running her publishing company, Mary Ann, who is the mom of two current St. Andrew’s students, Daniel ‘15 and Mary Alex ’18, will be busy attending many track meets and events. Both students are fine athletes. Daniel was a runner for two SPC Championship Cross Country teams, and Mary Alex runs and plays volleyball for the Middle School.
I’m sure you will see Mary Ann on campus. When you do, please tell her, “Thanks for the memories.”
